Ancora oggi nell’Egeo, quando le onde sono mosse e la navigazione diventa difficile, si è soliti chiedere alle acque se il Re Alessandro viva, e, in una sorta di rito apotropaico, si risponde che sì, vive, regna e governa il mondo: è una formula che viene tradizionalmente rivolta alla sorella di Alessandro il Grande, Tessalonica, che, per il dolore della morte del fratello, si trasformò in sirena, sempre alla ricerca del re perduto. La storia di Alessandro divenne leggenda già mentre il re era in vita, e il cosiddetto Romanzo di Alessandro ne è la prova, nelle sue versioni greche, latine, siriache, armene, ebraiche, finanche malesi e mongoli. Si presenta in questo testo l’edizione del terzo libro della cosiddetta recensio λ, tradizionalmente datata al VII/VIII secolo, in cui, nella storia leggendaria del Macedone, compaiono anche, per la prima volta, testi come l’Apocalisse dello Ps.-Metodio e una raccolta di apophthegmata. A corredare l’edizione sinottica dei sette manoscritti, si offre anche un’introduzione generale sul testo, una discussione paleografica dei codici e un commento storico-letterario di alcuni degli episodi fondamentali.

Even today, in the Aegean Sea, when the waves are too difficult to navigate, it is common to ask the sea whether King Alexander lives, and, in a sort of apotropaic ritual, the sailors have to answer that he lives, he reigns and he rules the world: this is traditionally said to Alexander the Great’s sister, Thessalonike, who became a mermaid for the pain after her brother’s death, and is always searching for the King. Alexander’s story became legend even when he was alive, and the so-called Alexander Romance is a clear proof of this, in its Greek, Latin, Syriac, Armenian, Hebrew and even Malay and Mongolian versions. This book presents the edition of the third book of the so-called recensio λ, traditionally dated to the 7th/8th century, where, in between the legendary history of the King some texts appear, for the first time, such as the Apocalypse of Ps.-Methodius and a collection of apophthegmata. The the synoptical edition of the seven manuscripts is accompanied by an general introduction on the text, a palaeographical discussion of the codices and an historical and litterary commentary of some of the most important episodes.
