The role of the University in the training of young
engineers specialists for tunnelling: the lesson learned and
some food for thought after more than five years of
experience matured working on major international projects
The lecture aims to investigate the role of
University in training the young engineers.
The Italian graduates’ technical background
is generally and widely well recognised, but
there are other important aspects which have
been undervalued by the Italian University’s
programme and courses so far. When working
in an international environment in fact, any
young engineer would need to proactively
work in a team, recognising his/her role and
understanding of his/her own task. He/She is required to have at least a basic knowledge
of financial and legal aspects related to the
projects and to recognise the importance of
“time vs budgetâ€. He/She will be progressively
more exposed to Clients and therefore needs
to be professional and responsive with them,
developing an ability to present with impact.
Through the example of some interesting
projects developed in almost seven years of
experience abroad, the lecturer illustrates
which are the main challenges to be faced by
a young engineer after the completion of his
academic course of study and how the Italian
background represents an excellent but not sufficient know-how. Having collected
the feedback from other Italian engineers
and from their English senior managers, he
builds a discussion about the strength and
the weakness of the Italian Engineering University
system, as perceived from abroad.
The role of engineers, and in particular of
Civil Engineers, that work in a dynamically
changing world, is evolving in order to cope
with wider and interconnected complex
problems. Our University has now the duty
to prepare the next generations of engineers
and therefore it needs to quickly adapt
to be ahead of the game.
