Se è vero che l’indagine in merito alla comparsa dei registri negli organi italiani ha il suo ambito di ricerca privilegiato nelle fonti documentarie archivistiche, tuttavia anche le fonti letterarie possono dare qualche interessante testimonianza. È il caso della Montyriana Collatio, opera dell’umanista bresciano Cristoforo Barzizza: redatto fra il 1490 e il 1496, il testo è un dialogo sulle arti liberali fra l’autore e il suo allievo, il nobile Francesco Giovanni Emigli. Nella sezione in cui si dibatte dello sviluppo nell’arte musicale, uno degli interlocutori afferma che fra le grandi innovazioni di quegli anni è da menzionare l’introduzione dei registri negli organi. Egli sostiene infatti che questa nuova soluzione tecnica permette una maggiore espressività che opera straordinariamente sull’animo degli ascoltatori. Anche le fonti archivistiche dell’area bresciana testimoniano nella seconda metà del ’400 una vivace attività di adattamento, manutenzione e costruzione di organi con registri.

Although the investigation into the appearance of registers in Italian organs primarily relies on archival documentary sources, literary sources can also provide interesting evidence. One such example is the Montyriana Collatio, a work by the Italian humanist Cristoforo Barzizza from Brescia, written between 1490 and 1496. The text is a dialogue about the liberal arts between the author and his student, the nobleman Francesco Giovanni Emigli. Discussing the development of the musical art, one of the interlocutors states that the introduction of registers in organs is among the major innovations of those years. He argues that this new technical solution allows greater expressiveness, thus creating an extraordinary effect on the listeners’ souls. Archival sources from the Brescia area also attest to a lively activity of adaptation, maintenance and building of organs with registers in the second half of the 1400s.
