Climate Change on Screen: The Role of Television Series in Climate Change Representation

In recent decades, television series have taken on an increasingly central role in shaping the collective imagination, serving not only as entertainment but also as powerful vehicles for raising awareness of social and environmental issues. Among the topics addressed, climate change now occupies a growing space, with representations ranging from dystopian and apocalyptic scenarios to more realistic, documentary-style narratives. Through precise narrative, aesthetic and symbolic choices, many television produc- tions help shape public perception of the climate crisis, influencing the way viewers understand the phenomenon and react to it, both emotionally and cognitively. This paper aims to explore, through the analysis of several case studies (The 100, The Rain, Snowpiercer, The Handmaid’s Tale, Fortitude, The Expanse), the various narrative approaches to climate change in television series.
